Horizon Europe is the European Union (EU) funding programme for the period 2021 – 2027, which targets the sectors of research and innovation. The programme’s budget is around € 95.5 billion, of which € 5.4 billion is from NextGenerationEU to stimulate recovery and strengthen the EU’s resilience in the future, and € 4.5 billion is additional aid.

Detailed Call Description

Biometrics deserves a special innovation attention, which should include some of the following:

  • automation and scalability of the identification, identity verification, intelligence, investigation and evaluation processes;
  • robustness and validation of biometrics in forensic conditions;
  • biometric data protection and privacy;
  • harmonisation/standardisation of data and processes and conversion of existing biometric tool for use in the judicial system;
  • usage of biometrics in smartphones and other devices, including the possibility to unlock criminal’s devices using biometric data;
  • exchange of biometric data and interoperability of the systems, and risk of direct adoption of existing biometric tool for use in the judicial system.

    Eligibility For Participation Notes

    This topic requires the active involvement, as beneficiaries, of at least 2 Police Authorities 21 and at least 2 forensic institutes from at least 3 different EU Member States or Associated countries.
