Interregional Cooperation Program INTERREG EUROPE 2014-2020
Summary
The INTERREG EUROPE Program is financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and aims to improve the implementation of regional development policies and programs and especially programs aimed at Investment in Development and Employment as well as programs of the European Territorial objective Cooperation (EAC).
Programme Description
The INTERREG EUROPE Program is one of the instruments for the implementation of the EU’s cohesion policy.
Cohesion Policy seeks harmonious development throughout the Union by strengthening economic, social and territorial cohesion.
Following the success of INTERREG IVC (2007-2013), the INTERREG Europe Program was developed to continue the work of improving the effectiveness and efficiency of regional policies.
The main objective of the program is to improve the implementation of regional development policies and programs, mainly the programs for Investment in Development and Employment and especially, the programs under the EAC objective, by promoting the exchange of experience and knowledge between the agencies .
In particular, INTERREG Europe focuses on two operational objectives:
According to the operational objectives, the program supports two types of actions:
- Interregional cooperation projects and
- Policy Learning Platforms.
INTERREG Europe covers the following thematic objectives:
Strengthening research, technological development and innovation
a) strengthening research and innovation (R&D) infrastructures and capacities to develop excellence in research and innovation and the promotion of centers of competence, in particular centers of European interest
b) promotion of business investment in R&D, development of links and synergies between companies, research and development centers and the higher education sector, in particular through the promotion of investment in the development of products and services, in technology transfer, in social innovation, in ecological innovation, in public service applications, demand stimulation, networking, clusters and open innovation through smart specialisation, as well as supporting technological and applied research, pilot lines, early product validation actions, advanced manufacturing capabilities and first production especially in key general application technologies and dissemination of general application technologies.
Strengthening the competitiveness of SMEs
a) Supporting the capacity of SMEs to develop in regional, national and international markets and to participate in innovation processes.
Supporting the transition to a low carbon economy in all sectors
a) Promoting low-carbon strategies for all types of areas, especially urban areas, including the promotion of sustainable multimodal urban mobility and mitigation adaptation measures
Preservation and protection of the environment and promotion of the efficient use of resources
a) Preservation, protection, promotion and development of natural and cultural heritage
b) Supporting the industrial transition towards a resource-efficient economy, promoting green growth, eco-innovation and environmental performance management in the public and private sectors.
Financing percentage by EU or other bodies / Level of Subsidy or Loan
85% ERDF for public bodies and organizations under public law from all 28 EU member states
75% ERDF for private non-profit organizations from all 28 EU member states
50% Norwegian funding for public organizations under public law and private non-profit organizations from Norway
Swiss funding - partners from Switzerland are invited to contact the Interreg Switzerland national contact point to receive information on funding opportunities relevant to Switzerland
Total Budget
€ The Program is financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). The total budget of the program amounts to 359 million euros. 322.4 million euros pertain to interregional cooperation programs implemented by EU partners. Partners from Norway and Switzerland will be co-financed from national resources of their respective countries. 15.3 million euros will be allocated for the policy learning platforms and 21.3 million euros for technical assistance, namely the preparation, implementation and monitoring of the program.Thematic Categories
