Call

Improved border checks for travel facilitation across external borders and improved experiences for both passengers and border authorities’ staff

Detailed Call Description

Mobile or transportable technologies would enable authorities to quickly react to actual situations at the borders. Specifically, new technologies can support authorities on document and information checks and verification including health or security checks as necessary, establishing a secure and reliable communication channel to a backend service and providing immediate feedback to the field officer. Thus, solutions should have the potential to contribute to a better border crossing experience for travellers, operators and authorities, improving flows at border crossing points while maintaining or improving reliability and security of checks.

Research should advance the capabilities to capture and use biometrics of travellers without them having to stop and in natural contexts for border checks, in full respect of fundamental rights and considerations to safeguard data and integrity.

Proposals should also delineate the plans for further uptake at national and EU level, and deliver on its goals. Additionally, proposals are expected to address the priorities of the European Border and Coast Guard and of its Agency (Frontex).
