Programme Description

Horizon Europe is the European Union (EU) funding programme for the period 2021 – 2027, which targets the sectors of research and innovation. The programme’s budget is around € 95.5 billion, of which € 5.4 billion is from NextGenerationEU to stimulate recovery and strengthen the EU’s resilience in the future, and € 4.5 billion is additional aid.

Detailed Call Description

The EIT KIC will be an integrated partnership bringing together leading companies, higher education institutions, research organisations and other stakeholders in the innovation process to tackle pressing societal challenges through the development of products, services and processes and also by nurturing innovative, entrepreneurial individuals. The KIC connects excellence-driven innovation hubs, the Co-location Centres to become leading centres of excellence, competing and collaborating with other innovation hubs across the world. The KIC is expected to follow a long-term innovation and impact-driven strategy, operating with a business logic and a results-oriented approach to contribute to the achievement of the EIT’s overall mission, the priorities laid down in the EIT Strategic Agenda 2021-2027 and the attainment of the general objectives established in Horizon Europe.  Additional information for an EIT KIC, including, inter alia, its impact, it’s governance and management, the partnership etc, can be found in the call document (please see the link under the Further information section of this email).  

The indicative amount for the Start-up Grant is up to € 6,000,000. The Start-up Grant shall be used to finance the start-up activities and initial pilot actions to prepare for the first year of full operations and business plan implementation expected to start on 1 January 2024. The grant amounts which will be allocated to the new KIC as from 2024 will be subject to an EIT Governing Board funding allocation decision.

Start-up Grant (1-4): 100% Ramp-up Grant (5-7): 80% Maturity (8-11): 70% Exit from EIT Grant: 50%

Eligibility For Participation Notes

As per the provisions of Article 9 (3) and (4) of the EIT Regulation, the minimum condition to form a KIC is the participation of at least three independent partner organisations, that are comprised of at least one Higher Education Institution, one research organisation and one private company and that are established in at least three different Member States. In addition, at least two thirds of the partner organisations forming a KIC shall be established in the Member States.
