Design and optimisation of energy flexible industrial processes (Processes4Planet Partnership) (IA)
Summary
Cluster 4 promotes investments that will shape competitive and trusted technologies for a European industry enabling production and consumption to respect the planet’s boundaries and maximising the benefits for all parts of society in the variety of social, economic and territorial contexts in Europe. This will build a competitive, digital, low-carbon and circular industry, ensure sustainable supply of raw materials, develop advanced materials and provide the basis for advances and innovation in global challenges to society.
Programme Name
Programme Description
Horizon Europe is the European Union (EU) funding programme for the period 2021 – 2027, which targets the sectors of research and innovation. The programme’s budget is around € 95.5 billion, of which € 5.4 billion is from NextGenerationEU to stimulate recovery and strengthen the EU’s resilience in the future, and € 4.5 billion is additional aid.
Call
Detailed Call Description
The direct integration of renewable energy generation and the higher overall efficiencies will require further flexibility solutions in process industries. Energy storage or conversion in the form of electricity, heat or other energy vectors can further increase an installation’s flexibility.
Proposals should address the following aspects:
- In an existing process, identification of potential flexibility that allows an efficient and competitive operation.
- Redesign and modification of the process to enable more flexibility in operation or the shift from batch processes to continuous processes, etc.
- Redesign and modification of the process to increase its flexibility response rate towards a higher energy efficiency at subsystem level.
- Development or redesign of digital process control systems, including, e.g., digital twins with integrated multi-agent systems, etc., supported by smart sensors and integrated analytical tools, to realise the flexibility of the process and to create connections to grid integration platforms.
- Evaluation of the potential use of onsite energy storage and conversion (electricity, heat, or other energy vectors) for the proposed flexible solution and integration of such energy solutions.
- Optimisation of the new process design at pilot scale.
Proposals should include a safety and a life cycle assessment for the implementation of the developed technologies and a contribution to standardisation.
Proposals should include activities that specifically target the collaboration with other European projects on energy flexibility in their work plan. Also, International Cooperation is encouraged, in particular with US and Canada.
This topic implements the co-programmed European partnership Processes4Planet.
