Support to the markets and trade of agroecological food products under the Food and Nutrition Security and Sustainable Agriculture (FNSSA) partnership

Summary

This cluster aims at reducing environmental degradation, halting and reversing the decline of biodiversity on land, inland waters and sea and better managing natural resources through transformative changes of the economy and society in both urban and rural areas. It will ensure food and nutrition security for all within planetary boundaries through knowledge, innovation and digitalisation in agriculture, fisheries, aquaculture and food systems and steer and accelerate the transition to a low carbon, resource efficient circular economy and sustainable bioeconomy, including forestry.

Programme Description

Horizon Europe is the European Union (EU) funding programme for the period 2021 – 2027, which targets the sectors of research and innovation. The programme’s budget is around € 95.5 billion, of which € 5.4 billion is from NextGenerationEU to stimulate recovery and strengthen the EU’s resilience in the future, and € 4.5 billion is additional aid.

Detailed Call Description

Proposals should address the following:

  • Conducting a scoping exercise on existing agroecological initiatives in Africa, including an analysis of what has worked or failed, and why.
  • Increased competitiveness of the agroecological production for safe and nutritious food in Africa with improved quality and transparency in local, regional and international markets.
  • Supporting training, and capacity building for actors in agro-ecological businesses and fair trades.
  • Organising demonstration and networking events with relevant actors of the food chain, ranging from producers to final users, including administrations relevant for promoting agro-ecological food products.
  • Implementation of the new technologies, including internet of things and artificial intelligence, to bring transparency to the agro-ecology food value chain.

Eligibility For Participation Notes

Legal entities established in in all African Union member states* are exceptionally eligible for Union funding. * “African Union member states” includes countries whose membership has been temporarily suspended.

Proposals must implement the ‘multi-actor approach’ and ensure adequate involvement of the farming sector and all other relevant food chain actors.

International organisations with headquarters in a Member State or associated country are exceptionally eligible for funding.

In addition to the minimum number of participants set out in the General Annexes, consortia must include at least three independent legal entities established in Africa. The places of establishment of at least two of these legal entities must be in the same geographical region of Africa (as defined by the African Union: https://au.int/en/member_states/countryprofiles2).

The consortium selected for funding is encouraged to cooperate with actors such as the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC).
